An experiment is a controlled procedure that is carried out to test a hypothesis. This typically involves manipulating one or more variables to observe the effects it has.
Experiments are not just singular -- any data and paper you look at will be the culmination of many, many experiments. One after the other, repeated over and over again. It's important to note an experiment will not always work or bear the results the researcher wants. And that's just as important as the ones that do.
